This is one of those " If it were done when 'tis done, then 'twere well. It were done quickly" situations, so speed and accuracy would be of the essence.

It's currently a Zen based them and it would make sense to continue using Zen as the parent theme.
There are some custom modules (gc_*) that put content onto the home page; these should probably be replaced by views, blocks, and maybe panels.
